Your Winter Garden Maintenance Guide

Fall is the best time for permanent planting in your garden. Although it may be tempting to buy shrubs and perennials during the blooming season in spring, in fact fall is a better time for planting these especially in regions that experience mild winter. Planting at this time of the year means that the heat of the summer is past and the approaching rainfall will provide ample water to the still warm soil to support quick and deep rooting of the plants.

However, you may find it difficult to get a wider selection of shrubs and perennials in garden centers and nurseries for your fall winter planting. Most of what you will find will not be in bloom.

For frost tender type plants spring is the best season for planting. However, landscape plants are best planted during the fall-winter season. Species of borderline hardiness should be avoided for winter planting.

Planting in fall has many advantages. Plants require much less water with days shortening and nights becoming longer. Plants transpire less and have lesser water requirements. Strong roots start forming in the soil still warm from the summer heat and soaking winter rains help the roots to penetrate still deeper. The extensive root system of fall-winter planting will enable the plant to forage water in a better way to resist heat stress during the following summer as compared to the spring-planted ones which will require regular watering at least for their first summer.

You can also have a beautiful indoor winter garden if you just follow a few basic winter garden maintenance rules. Here are some that will prove helpful.

Avoid over watering plants if they acquire a dry, brownish appearance during this time. Don't be alarmed. It is normal for plants to 'rest' and it is their natural reaction to the short fall lighting and the problem will correct itself in time. Maintain proper humidity as dry heat in the house may be damaging to the plants. A simple yet effective way to add moisture is to have a pot of boiling water around. This can work wonders for the plants. Place the plants wisely around the house. Plants which thrive in the shade should be placed where the sun does not hit them directly. Others that require direct sunlight should be placed near windows in a way that would let them be in direct sunlight most of the day which will allow them to grow healthily.

Be watchful for bugs and learn to recognize symptoms of bug problems. Take immediate steps to treat infestations with proper chemicals. Always do your research before purchasing plants of any type in order to learn about them and acquaint yourself with the specific care they require. Many plants have a dry soil requirement while others may need moist soil. Their feeding requirements also vary with some needing more frequent fertilizing that others. Keeping track of all this and doing proper follow up maintenance will let your plants give you the prettiest flowers and lovely foliage to warm you up with lively colors even during the cold winter months.
