Your Spring Garden Maintenance Guide

With spring approaching, the time to start organizing your garden is near. Start by preparing a list of herbs you would like to have in your garden keeping in mind the required time for their harvesting and the duration of the growing season. It there is not enough time then the best thing to do would be to start with saplings instead of growing seeds. This will give you an advantage of several weeks by shortening the time till harvesting. Before you plant anything you need to prepare a sketch of your herb garden on paper. This will let you properly organize your garden keeping in view the amount of sunlight received in the area and also the drainage conditions of the soil and decide on your scheme of planting.

Spring is the right time for you to begin planting. You must do this keeping in mind their full summer growth. Your must take into account their full growth height and provide adequate spacing while planting so that there is sufficient room to accommodate their full grown size. Initially planting in this fashion may give a sparse look to your garden in spring however, the summer months will see the herbs filling out giving you satisfaction on planting conservatively in spring.

Spring is also the time when you need to prepare and enrich the soil of your garden to allow plants to have sufficient nutrients for their health and growth right from the start of spring planting. The soil receives optimal natural moisture during spring and you can maximize its benefit by providing the soil with enough organic materials that will help retain the moisture through the approaching dry summer months.

A good beginning of spring planting would be to start flowers from seeds. When you begin to grow your own plants you will save quite a good amount of money. It will also give you a much wider selection of varieties and species. For example, you do not have to settle for a petunia mix available in some nursery or garden center but can choose the precise color and form that suits your preference.

You can experiment with many fragrant varieties of annuals like nicotiana or grow lesser known plant varieties like the Brazilian verbena or the firecracker vine. You have the freedom to start with perennials available at local garden centers in your area. When selecting herbs to plant, you can choose from many delicious varieties generally not available in super markets.

Pruning you roses is something that you need to do in spring. You need to trim them down right to any ornamental grasses. This is also the ideal time to remove the previous year's growth from perennials in your garden. This needs to be completed before the new sprouting begins. Flowering shrubs also need to be pruned a fortnight after blooming and before buds for next year appear.

You must pull out the weeds growing in the beds and around the base of you plants from the roots before they take hold and spread. Later it would prove extremely difficult to get rid of them. Mulching and fertilizing are two other important tasks of spring maintenance of your garden that cannot be overlooked at any cost.
