Your Seasonal Garden Pond Maintenance Checklist

Your garden pond will require different maintenance strategies during different seasons since the changing temperature will bring about varying problems that need to be solved with the right equipment and a little ingenuity. Here is a checklist based on different seasons to keep your garden pond and its various inhabitants, safe and healthy.

Summer. Summer brings high temperature and the threat of algae to your pond. Hence, it is important to increase the oxygen levels in your pond by incorporating an aerator or waterfall to keep the water fresh and moving. This will prevent the growth of algae and mosquitoes and also prevent the water from getting stagnant. Your resident fish should also be provided the ideal level of food so that the excess food is not accumulated in the warm pond. You can also introduce water plants such as water lilies that will not only control the algae but also provide shade to the water and thus keep it cool in the hot season.

Autumn. This season will witness a lot of leaves falling into your garden pond and will thus require additional physical effort on your part to keep your pond and your fish safe. If possible, install netting over your pond so that leaves do not drop in your pond. In case they do fall inside, then remove them immediately. Since dirt too will enter into your pond, change your pond water on a regular basis with water that has the same temperature as your pond to ensure that your fish remain safe. You should also remove any organic material that might have accumulated at the bottom of your pond. Clean your aerators filters regularly and if your pond reaches freezing point, then remove your pump and all filters so that they remain safe from any damage. As the temperature drops further you can also stop feeding your fish and should also transfer your plants indoors if they cannot withstand freezing.

Winter. During extreme winter, your pond might freeze over, but it is important that you maintain a hole or opening in the ice since any dangerous gas that is trapped under the ice can be harmful for your fish. If you observe any fish floating near the surface then you should immediately change the water or connect a pump or aerator to the water to remove any accumulated gases. Also, ensure that the surface of the pond does not get smothered with heavy layers of snow or ice.

Spring. The arrival of spring heralds an entire new cycle for your pond. Check your pumps or aerators and filters and get it all in running order. You can also add bacterial additives to compensate for any loss during the winter months. Get your water plants back into the pond or incorporate new ones. Get the right fish food for your fish. Install a new waterfall or fountain if you have not done so.

By taking appropriate care during the corresponding seasons, your garden pond will remain in the best of health and its various inhabitants will thank you for taking good care of them. By remaining alert to any potential problem and acting swiftly, you will be able to enjoy your garden pond for almost the entire year.
