Your Low Maintenance Gardening Guide

If you have young children in the house, a full time job and a house to clean, you may find gardening quite stressful. Each day you may look at teasing weeds, perennials that need planting, and thirsty flower pots asking for water, and suffer with guilt till the weekend arrives. There are many others who may be unable to tend to their gardens for entirely different reasons. Gardeners who are physically challenged or have lots of laundry to do may simply not be able to spare the time to lavish attention on backyard beds. Gardens in vacation homes may remain untended for long periods of time.

Gardens are meant to relieve stress not generate it. Therefore, in such conditions, a low maintenance garden is what one should have. The three most draining chores of gardening are weeding, watering and division of plants. If you can work out shortcuts to these, it will leave you with much more time to truly enjoy your garden and relax, rather than work and feel stressed. Here is how you can greatly reduce the hard work you need to put in to maintain your garden and keep it in great shape for a long time.

Good designing: As you plan your garden layout design try to minimize open bedding areas especially those you would be changing regularly; for example, areas reserved for annuals. Plan the borders and beds with paths and stepping stones for easy access to all areas to eliminate treading on the soil and compacting it. Choose plants carefully selecting those that require minimum look after and are suited to the location where you intend to plant them.

Proper preparation of the soil - For this you will need to dig up the bed area as deep as you can to remove old roots, rocks, large stones and weeds including their roots. Let small stones remain, as they will assist in drainage. If the bed soil is heavily clay based it is best to mix a little sharp sand and some small gravel or stones up to half an inch in size along with some organic matter. This will allow the soil to separate and improve drainage while the organic matter will provide rich nutrition to the soil. Feeding and enriching the soil before planting will ensure the best growing conditions to the plants.

Weed reduction/prevention measures - One good way to prevent weeds is to plant ground cover plants wherever possible. These are low growing plants that spread quickly and create a dense cover adding beauty and texture to the garden and effectively reduce maintenance work. At other places bare soil should be covered with mulch. These are excellent ways to prevent weeds from growing and will also provide gradual nutritional enrichment to the garden soil.

Planting hardy perennials - These plants are hardy, can withstand the heat of summer and also occasional drought, and needs division and deadheading. Fringed bleeding heart, lady's mantle, sedum, hostas, yarrow and daylilies and many others are workhorses that needing very little attention. Trees and shrubs are also additions to the garden that can provide good visual interest without putting in much effort. If you visit nurseries with a view to look for such plants you are sure to find many exciting varieties that can let you build a beautiful garden that can be maintained with minimum attention.
