Your Autumn Garden Maintenance Guide

As the wonderful summer comes to an end and is replaced by autumn, your garden too will require some additional care to prepare for the coming winter. As trees and plants begin to shed their once-green coat you will need to engage in some physical activity to clean up your garden and get it ready for next spring and summer.

The falling leaves and grass cuttings will provide you with compost in the future provided you keep it moist and rotate it with a shovel at regular intervals. If you have a compost pit, then it will become very easy but even if you do not have one, then you can just use a corner of your garden to store your compost. Autumn is also the time to cut down everything wherever the blooming process is complete. You could leave those plants where the blooming process is not yet completed. This is also the right time to plant new flowering varieties such as Daffodils, Iris, Crocus, Tulips, etc. and even other plant varieties such as Astilbe and Hostas. You can also use throwaway fish and bone pieces on the borders of your flowering beds to provide additional nutrition to your plants.

Your lawn too will require some physical effort before the onset of winter. Use your rake and fork to scarify any accumulated debris and moss and also enables the soil to loosen up and breathe better. You can also add some winter slow-release feed to your lawn. Once you have trimmed down your lawn to a height of around 15mm, apply a layer of top dressing, which is basically a mix of compost, sand and loam and which could be bought from your neighborhood gardening store or even over the Internet. Spread out the layer of top dressing by using the back of your garden rake. If your garden is large and if you also have neighbors that are planning to do the same, then you could join hands and get it done professionally and mechanically while also sharing the labor and material costs.

You can plant hardy perennial seeds during Autumn, so that they are ready to bloom in the next season. If you do have any soft perennials, then you could shift them in pots and store them in any warm area, which is also frost-free. If you have rose bushes, then autumn would be a good time to trim them down so that they can survive the harsh winter months. If there are any end-of-season sales organized in your neighborhood, then be sure to pay a visit and pick out the required seeds, tools and fertilizer that could be available at reduced rates. If you have not installed fencing around your garden, then now would be a good time to do so since it will prevent rats or other rodents from seeking a warm haven under your lawn or plants during winter.

Any additional hard work that you put in during the autumn months will be suitably rewarded as your garden springs back to life during the coming spring and summer months. This work will also provide you with some exercise and thus will be profitable for your garden and your own health too.
