Some Basic Gardening Tips

A healthy garden adds beauty and charm to your home. The following details can provide you with some good tips that can help keep your garden bright, appealing and a joy to behold.

You will find spreading organic mulch on your garden soil very advantageous. It helps retain moisture that is necessary for healthy plants. At the same time it will prevent growth of weeds and soil erosion by rains or other elements. You can prepare organic mulch yourself by shredding leaves, grass, sticks, bark, compost or other organic material. For this you may need to buy small garden chipper/mulching equipment. Ideal mulch size is three to four inches.

Your garden will look much better covered with mulch as compared to bare soil. As the mulch decomposes it will provide organic fertilizer to the soil and nutrients will seep into the soil with rain or watering. As you add organic material to your garden it is going to be a good breeding ground for earthworms, which are a boon for gardens as they till the soil and provide natural fertilizer. If you need additional fertilizer, make sure you use organic fertilizer. Chemical fertilizers will increase soil toxicity.

To build a healthy garden check the temperature and soil quality that is best suited for plants you want to have in your garden and select the ones that are the closest match for the usual temperature and the type of soil in your own backyard. Plan to plant trees around areas you would prefer to be shady such as near the patio, garden swing, the dog house or any other place of your preference.

Keep a track of the insects and bugs you find in the garden. Most of them are harmless. However, find out which ones can be harmful to your garden and what precautions and/or remedial measures you need to take to rid them to prevent damage to your garden.

The time you water your garden and do fresh planting is very important. It is best to do the watering early in the morning. Always do new planting on cloudy or overcast days which will greatly increase the survival rate of the new plants than if planted on dry sunny days.

If you have weeds in your garden that you want to safely destroy, use vinegar. It is an organic herbicide and your best bet for weed problems. It should be sprayed directly on the rouge plants taking care to avoid contact with non-target plants. Effective weed control is possible by using vinegar with 20 percent acetic acid content. Spray on warm dry days when temperature is 65 degrees or above. You can also use vinegar to destroy weeds in gravel driveways and paving cracks between bricks or stone tiles.

By careful planning you can make even a small garden look bigger. This is possible by planting your garden keeping the color of your plants in mind. If you arrange your garden in a way that warm bright colored plants are in the front and cool colored ones are at the back, your garden will look bigger that it actually is.
