Selecting Plants for Your Garden

You need to pay careful attention to a variety of factors while deciding which shrubs, perennials and other plants you want in your garden. One important consideration is the amount of sunlight your garden receives. Different plants suitable to growth in different light conditions are available in abundance and you are sure to find many plants to suit the situation in your garden. Your selection should also aim at matching the plants to the soil conditions of your garden while also making sure that selected plants have similar water requirements. Plant size forms another important consideration. As the plants grow and mature their size should be an appropriate fit in the scheme of your garden.

Your garden is a surrounding where you feel relaxed and happy and enjoy its freshness and beauty. You must therefore select plants that exude mild fragrance and are compatible to a color scheme of your liking when in bloom. Choose plants that bloom every month from February through November and have attractive foliage in all seasons. You can get a lot of help if you visit public parks, nurseries, garden centers and also study various catalogs of plants and seeds to become familiar with the time when different plants blossom and also view the colors they provide. You may find it much easier if you prepare a month wise chart in which you can include one or two main or 'star' plants of your choice and a number of other supporting plants for each month. You can extend this system to the selection of plants for fall and winter that you may wish to integrate into your landscape.

You cannot think of a backyard garden without shrubs. Shrubs have an exceptional quality of transforming drab surroundings into attractive showpieces through their diversity in terms of shape, size, flowers and foliage. If you feel something is missing from your garden, it is most likely to be shrubs, which are beautiful decorative plants that complement your garden and make it lush and inviting. Needing very little maintenance they provide that 'something special' to your garden. Not enough can be said about the beauty shrubs are capable of adding to your garden. If you pay a visit to your local home and garden center you may be able to really appreciate what shrubs can do for your garden and select some from the endless varieties available. These versatile plants can be used as screens for blocking out dust and street noise and also be planted to hide many things that may interfere with a desirable landscape view such as trash can areas, heating and cooling units, utility meters, swimming pool mechanicals etc. They can be planted to accentuate different parts of your home like the patio, pools and dooryards or thorny varieties may be used to act as deterrents to children and animal from using your yard for shortcuts.

A few well place shrubs can add vivid color to your garden and many can feed birds as well. Shrubs display their beauty through showy leaves, fresh flowers and berries of different colors. Roses, forsythia and blueberries add captivating tones of red and yellow to your garden. Six feet tall enkianthus with three inch long leaves that change color from butter yellow, tangerine orange and scarlet red with changing seasons makes a desirable addition to plants in your garden.
